LABC South West Awards

Space Industries Limited recently became finalists at the South West LABC (Local Authority Building Control Awards) in Torquay, against nominations for ‘Best Commercial Extension / Alteration’ and ‘Best Local Authority Client Partnership’.

Details of The Project That Earned Us Our Nomination

Rapid increase in worldwide sales of Powerboats & Super-yachts by Poole based Sunseeker International have driven an insatiable demand for additional Manufacturing & administration building capacity at its various sites in Poole.

As a specialist  Industrial & Interior Contractor – Space Industries Ltd have worked  over the past 5yrs in partnership with Sunseeker & Building Consultancy at Borough of Poole along with Dorset Fire & Rescue Service in the challenge of squeezing more space from existing & new buildings.  In particular the realising of cubic volume within a building through the supply of some 29 structural steel mezzanine floors & walkways installed in various configurations to suit operational & compliant requirements.

One such project recently involved a two tier mezzanine floor within an existing portal frame open plan boat shed over some 438sq.m. (4,712sq.ft) for use as a Staff Canteen facility seating 220 staff with full servery facilities. This was constructed over an existing & retained Woodmill operation including an external balcony with breathtaking views of Poole Quay.

This close design team relationship between Space Industries Limited and Building Consultancy at Borough of Poole with Dorset Fire & Rescue Service enabled successful `closure` on this particular project through issues involving the provision of compliant Fire protection, Fire detection, ground bearing considerations, & provision for means of escape. Where the nature of works within the manufacturing environment normally dictates a non requirement in the provision of Disabled Access due to the nature of boat building, on this particular project it was deemed a requirement and hence a disabled persons platform lift was provided to both levels.

A two tier mezzanine arrangement has provided a balcony feature on the second floor whilst the first floor leads out onto an open balcony outside through a curtain wall glazing arrangement installed into a former loading door opening.

Maintained manufacturing operations dictated steelwork to be installed over a two week summer shutdown period with the ground floor area re-instated ready for Woodmill operations upon their return from holidays with Space Industries responsible to schedule & plan installation to guarantee the achieving of this objective.
